I am wiring an addition to a riding arena in Alberta. Along one side of the arena will be six stables and a tack room. This addition is open to the arena one the one side. there is a lighting panel already installed in the tack room. With this area being open into such a large area is it still considered a catagory 1 or 2? I currently do not have access to the National Farm building code of Canada.

Appendix B, #18-018 leans towards it being a Class 1, Division 1. Before you do anything, positively identify what class it is. There will be dusts and fibers in the air, making it a hazardous location.
Appendix B, #22-002 says that horse stables "in rural farm areas" are Category 1.
My recommendation is do your homework, or better yet, ask the inspector for guidance. It is part of his/her job and should be more than happy to assist you. After all, safety is the concern.

Thanks for the reply. As an electrician experienced in oilfield instalations I know that Class 1, Zone 1 is an area where explosive gases are likely. the hazards in horse stables are corrosive vapors in the air (urine, manure, sweat, etc.) as well as rodents whom are attracted to the hay stored nearby. Rule 22-204(3) permits a wiring change to damp locations with adequate ventilation. If these requirements are similiar to ventilation in section 18(for explosive gases) then the amount of air flow in such a large area with a ventilation fan would lower the category list to non-clasified except directly inside horse stalls. I have a phone call into two inspectors but have no reply yet. I would like to put in my bid but the wiring methods would double the cost for wiring and fixtures depending on the rating of the building. If there is an alowance for 'adequate ventilation' I wish they would state what they consider adequate.
