I am in the beginning stages of developing my systems and processes for my company. I have watched many service companies in this area run around with no structure to their business at all, and I have no intrest in repeating the same mistaes. I have read on this forum and I believe that you must set up your business as if it were going to be franchised, so that it will run efficiently regardless of who is in what postion so long as they follow the outlined system. That being said, if anyone has ideas on the things that should be outlined and any do's and dont's that they can pass along, I would appreciate it greatly Thanks Ed

| Sure - An outline: Scripts for the receptionist and the technicians. Parts lists. Flat rate computer and printer or book and pens and papers. Bar code scanner. Supply house willing to deliver a restock box for each truck each day if needed. Truck with GPS so they can take them home. Graphics on the side of the trucks. One of the 1st three pages in the yellow pages that give a feeling of goodness. Same day service Financing. Guarantees. Better Business Bureau or equal Radio advertising for men Drug testing. Boot covers. A web Pages where they can schedule an appointment on line Training in sales and presentation. Paper forms Communications Cells, Wireless dispatching Uniforms and a spare on the truck A cohesive operation that makes it an event that the neighbors will like to see when you pull up in front of the neighbors house.

| JP's suggestions are excellent.
I would add that they should be put in the context of a business plan and a budget.
Look for small business forums and networking/small business groups in your area. You want to learn as much as possible from the other (non-competing) small businesses in your area. I wouldn't go to these groups looking for business (which may occur - but may not), but for support. I think one problem many small business owners have is that they often feel very isolated. They have employees and customers, but no one to share ideas with. Also, your fellow small business owners can be an excellent source for where to find a good accountant, which state fees need to be paid, etc

Here you go ladies...

An excellent site for the 'business' side of the business. Look for a guy named 'Old Jack' for some excellent and free tax advice. They also have lawyers, etc.

John, I wonder if you could elaborate a little bit, what would this look like?
Thanks, Ed

I mean that when the neighbors look out the window they see your very neat and clean, professional looknig truck across the street and uniformed electricians going in to the house, and they may become envious (we hope) and decide to remember your company for when then need some electrical work.
