The E-myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber Highly recommended by others here. (Not these two which are out of date The E-myth... and E-myth contractor) Why most small business don't work and what to do about it. (Pretend i.e think as if ) you were going to franchise your business. You would have to fine tune every facet of the operation and document it all. Make the business dependant on systems not persons.
Getting to YES (Read it long ago) It is about negotiating. Practice the tactic of going in to sticker shock when a salesman announces a price, so he will lower it.
(California) Contractors License, Law and Reference book by the CSLB
What others? Care to review one?

| John,
I will go get e-myth tonight. Recently read " who moved my cheese" O.K.
Another book that is a must read is the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" Great book to help with all facets of life.
"The Road Less Traveled" about honesty with oneself.
Will have to read more business book though. Has anyone read the one minute manager?

| Yes Add it to the list. We need a review of those books above. One minute manager, helps you keep you schedule open for when opportunity knocks and or the GOOD customer calls.
It is not a book but "If you prioritize your tasks you will get almost half of them done, if you do not, you will get almost none of them done." I find this to be true. I added the almost part. JaP

| The E-Myth revisited is a great read. Reading the contractor version of it is a waste of time in my opinion, unless you are in a new construction or production based mindset. The mention of "Who Moved My Cheese" is good. If you read it, we are all looking for the cheese already; thats what led us to these forums. I make every employee read Brian Tracy's "Goals." It is a great overview of their personal and career outlook, and works extremely well with our training. I encourage my employees to share their goals with me so I can be as supportive as possible. It has worked extremely well for us. I also give each employee a copy of "More Than Enough" by Dave Ramsey. It is a personal finance book that I encourage them to read, but do not require. It is a great benefit to them, and low cost to me. It is the least you can do for your employees, especially the ones who you know are desperately trying to better themselves.

| Do not waste money on "Unleash the Animal in You" by Terry Nicholson. Highly NOT recommended. I too, offer to send you my copy if you ask for it and you can add your comments here.

| I read a book called "Rain Making" by Ford Harding. It is directed at "professionals" (lawyers, consultants, architects, engineers) but I found it to be one of the better "networking" books out there. Mr. Harding writes reasonably well, and the book is better organized then many in the genre.
He is honest though in that he offers no quick fixes. He notes that one of the problems that people have when they decide to get out more and "network" is that they expect results too quickly. He notes that it can take three years before your efforts pay dividends, but that when they do the results can be dramatic. The problem is that most people give up after about a year (when the time spent to payoff is the lowest).
