Subject - Structured Wiring Systems
Mike Delaney We are wiring most homes now a days with a Structured Wiring System. We pull a "TECH" bundle which is a bannana cable that consists of 2 CAT5e, and 2 Quad sheild RG-6 coaxals, to each bedroom, entertainment area, kitchen, etc, from a central hub called a media panel. The 1 CAT5e is for up to 4 phone lines, the other CAT5e if for a LAN, one RG-6 coaxal is for TV, the other for a LAN for your TV,VCR,DVD, etc., or sattelite. You can add more CAT5 wires for cameras, Door Bell, Thermastat, etc., it all plays part in the "Smart Home" system. I was using a "SQD MULTI-LINK" system wich is a media panel and components made by SQD. It is an enexpensive system that is easy to use, and upgradable. We swithed to the "ONQ" brand, which is alot more upgradable, and comparable in price, and is easy to install. Does anyone have input on Structured Wiring, or media panels??
side-cut1 Mike, I prefer the ON-Q panels to any other. The expandability of these panels is pretty amazing. We typically only use these on more of the custom home than the tract home. And it is pretty easy to insatll. I like the networking capability it offers and so do homeowners. Being able to tie all of the homes computers together is a nice feature. In the latest system we installed the homeowner loved the fact that she could pick up her telephone to answer her front door. We incorporated a few video screens along with cameras so she could view who was at the door as well as talk to them.It really is a nice system.
Mike Delaney side-cut1,

We install the 9 X 6 Advanced box in most homes, there about $90.00, and accomodates most homes around here, unless your doing customs. The only thing I don't like about this box is that its only a 12" enclosure. What we've done lately is pull all the regular PH & TV into the box and terminate, and all data, and extra coax be leave in a coil above the panel...alot of homes will probably never use it??!! If you put all the cables into the 12" enclosure, theres not much room for expansion, on a 4 tech bundle system with a couple of phones. We charge $100.00 for each tech bundle run, $30 for each PH, and TV, and $150 for a media panel. On the tech bundle cover plate we use a 4 port, with 1 PH, 1 TV, and blank the other 2 off, so the customer knows there is extra cables in the box.
