Subject - Adding outlets to light switches
Darla My 1940s home doesn't have nearly enough outlets, and I'd like to convert some single light switches to the kind that have a couple of plugs next to them. Is this possible or recommended for the DIY-er with a bit of electrical experience?
David Hyatt When try not to give a lot of info to DIY-ers for there own safety. I would not recommend you doing the work yourself, but depending on how the wiring is run it is possible.
Darla I am personally not doing the work (God help us!); my brother-in-law, who works with electrical systems but is not an electrician per se, would do it. I just wanted a little more info before deciding whether to beg him to do yet another job on the house. Thanks for your help!
MSD Yes it can be done rather easily as long as there is a grounded conductor present. You may be required to install GFCI protection and mark the outlet "NO GROUND" if an equipment ground is not present. The box may or may not need to be changed depending on the wiring method used.

Reguardless of the circumstances involved, you should have a licensed electrician do the work (based on the age of your home and the wiring methods used in the 1940's).
