A place to exchange BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ideas.
Techniques that help you work ON your business, rather than IN your business. Bidding, Advertising, Hiring, Keeping good men, Profit sharing, Estimating programs, Flat Rate pricing, Labor manuals, Benefit plans, Uniforms, Trucks, Warrantees.
NOT labor rates, since they vary too much across the country. NOT for how to be an electrician, as there are other forums for that here.

| Don't get locked in to a poorly performing job, WHAT EVER YOU DO!
Spend some time NOW looking for another job to bid.
There is a risk of getting a job and neglecting to bid other jobs, and then when the job is over and you have time to bid other jobs you can't because you need work, resulting in a feast and famine cycle over and over.
Get to a point of being happy to win one out of nine bids. Later you can get it down to one out of three. If you win your first one you are highly at risk, even if he is a friend, unless some one else has checked your numbers.
If you have 3 or 4 bids in process AT ALL TIMES, you will be ok.
Leave cards at the hardware stores. Advertise in the through away newspaper. Put out flyers around your area. Hand out flyers to people that are in line to get a building permit at City Hall. Put them up on bill boards. Find the local town web page or Craig's list or equal and write up a note.

| Get out and meet people: network. Many people in construction are very "object" orientated and not "people" oriented. We like to fix things or build things.
Getting the really good jobs (at any level of construction)has a lot to do with knowing the right people and them liking you. There are about a million good books on the internet about networking that can be had quite cheaply.
I like to think that I do a good job, but I have gained many opportunities because of who I knew. And often the help comes from very unexpected sources. You will go a lot further if people are helping you and you are willing to accept there help.
