Subject - FREE CODE BOOKS TO ALL
shocky DID YOU KNOW THAT PUBLIC LAWS AND RECORDS ARE FREE.SO HOW CAN SOMEONE PUBLISH AND SELL THE LAW.THE ELECTRICAL CODE IS LAW,IS'NT IT?
JimmyDee Only after it has been adopted by a local or state government.
Jim
Ryan_J That doesn't mean that you are entitled to a printed and bound book. I can't require that the government mail me a copy of every legally enforcable precedent.

If you go to the city recorder's office, you can demand to see the copy of the code in the office, and if they can't produce one, you don't have to follow it, but that still doesn't mean that I can demand a free copy.

Look for this to be a hot topic though, given the trend of copyright infringement on the internet. There is a case occuring in Texas over this right now.
shocky my city has adopted the code like many others,so why should i pay for city ordinance,i think if they want us to learn and know these rules they should supply us with the information.i'm not trying to be cheap and petty, it's just an idea.
shocky I know about the case in Tx. That's where I live.
Do you pay for your income tax forms?
cs409 its a nip and tuck issue,,,,,,, first off......... the nec isnt a law.....its a book of codes, and this NEC is usually adopted as a guide line for a state, county, city, etc to use as their rules for electrical work....along with other building codes.... now, i live in texas and the new law dealing with license etc...in this they adopted the NEC as their guide lines for electrical work....they also left the door open for the state, city, county, etc etc etc, to make adjustments to fit their needs etc............ so just purchase the book and if some day you get one free in the mail, then u will have 2 LOL... oh,,,if we do start getting free code books, law books etc etc....am almost certain that it will cost u and others a lot more in some form of taxes than it would if you just purchased the books you need! best to you

What are the chances of that ever happening?
Jim
Ryan_J If there was a law passed saying that you would get the NEC free, the NFPA would stop writing it and they would go out of business. The NEC is the biggest cash cow the NFPA has.

I wouldn't hold your breath, nor would I want it to happen. Think about it...do you really want every city to make its own codes?
Pierre Belarge The NFPA is a Standard. It is NFPA Standard 70 ( then whatever year your jurisdiction follows, if it has been adopted by your jurisdiction). It only becomes a code when adopted.

As Ryan has said, the document has to be available for perusal, but it is not the jurisdiction's requirement to 'give' free copies out.

Also, when you get stopped for a ticket, and tell the officer that you didn't know the law, you still get the ticket.
The same goes for codes as adopted for law - it is the licensee's responsibility to 'seek' the information, the jurisdiction is not responsible to seek you out to provide the information.
Its a tough world out there , but those who take care of themselves usually fare better.

Pierre
Scott Vickrey Unfortunately, the NEC is subject to the same flaws as any other mandated system. I wonder do the lawyers complain about having to buy all those law books?
Pierre Belarge
No Scott, they charge for them. An issue it seems some electricians find so hard to do.

Pierre
Scott Vickrey Pardon me, I was feeling a little down when I made the previos post.
The code is truely better than the lack of it no doubt.
If only they would not frequently reference other codes internally. Is it me or do you never seem to get back to finish what you where learning about when you started?
Wouldn't it be nice if when the code references another portion of the code it included a short description of the referenced code like "overhead clearences"? I know that after years of reading the code you know this but what about the new guy? Is he not entitled to being able to easily follow the code?
Oops sorry off topic again!
Back to the topic:
Prepare to spend some money every three years and learn to love it!
cs409 time to clear the air,,,,the NEC code is free,,,,just go to the library and use it! providing someone didnt steal it.....
shocky just heard some guy at work taking about it.wondered what you all thought about the subject.i'm not demanding free books or pursuing one, just thought i would mention it.thanks for the input.
veganfan HEY I am back work and study kept me away for awhile, but as far as free govement documents I deal with this isue all the time for my union. I will tell you the free thing is a bluff like free diet pills just pay shipping and handling. By the time you pay for process charges and other paper work and shipping and handling charges you will pay quite a bit. What you will receive is a bunch of loose papers (not a nice neat book) and a lot of extra papers and bull which just confuse you even worse.

I personaly have bought the NEC soft bound and handbook, and cd rom and electrical exam prep book, pocket referance.

I do not have to pass the test for my job. becouse I work in an industrial work place which do not whant you to know the local codes or laws. That way you can not try to make them inforce the NEC.
I do all this and plan to take test becouse I love learning the code. I like the debates and find out what is correct and safe and to inforce and follow these codes. Maybe I am a bit high stung but I feel if you do not like this and want everything handed to you then maybe your in wrong field. I am not trying to be rude or point any fingers becouse I know four more are pointing back at me. I am just saying if some one thinks that the $60 spent on NEC every three years is too much or it is a burden to follow and learn these codes . Then you just might be doing a job that you realy do not like, and would be happier in a job you like and/or love.
Scott Vickrey Dan, Don't stay gone so long next time.
