Subject - emrg/exit lites
eem111 I am doing a free job for a chuch fellowship hall.I put the exit lites over the exit doors inside the building. Now someone is telling me I need a lite or exit sign on outside too. Is this true as I am not a commerical electrician any help would be appreciated. Thank You
Ryan_J Yes, you need emergancy illumination on the exterior. If you have access to the 2003 IBC, refer to section 1006.
JimmyDee Welcome eem111 to the ElectricalKnowledge site. Thanks for this question. The answer is something I did not know and it enlightened me in this area. Feel free to add questions and comments to the forum any time.

Mention of this kind of stuff that is our work, needs to be referenced in the NEC. Its hard to have to go to several different sources for information on work installs that are clearly electrical work.

You may need emergency lighting on the inside of the building also. Need to check with building inspector. It usually depends on the number of people that the hall can accommodate. I am speaking of battery packs with flood lts.

Ryan
Are you saying lts are required on the outside of the building?
eem111 I have allready put the emrg battery pack floods on inside now I need a flood on outside is this true
Ryan_J According to the IBC (and the UBC), emergancy illumination of the means of egress is required when ever two exits from a building or space is required. The means of egress is defined as "the exit access, the exit and the exit discharge". Lets break this down.

Exit access: Anywhere inside the building before the exit.
Exit: The exit door, or basically, a rated stairway enclosure.
Exit access: Anywhere between the exit and the public way (street).

So, once I have a space large enough to require two exits (such as a 3,000 sqaure foot office or a 1,500 sqaure foot mercantile building), I need E-lites and exit signs from the space all the way to the public way, which means I need them on the outside. :)
Ryan_J If your feeling good, try this quiz that I put together. It is more of a building code quiz than anything, but I may help you understand the requirements. I hope.
