Please explain current flow in a single phase 240v circuit, or a three phase circuit, why is a neutral not needed? Without a neutral how then does the current get back to its source? Does the current cancel, and if so, does the current flow simply stop at the load? Thank you!

| First you need to understand the voltages in the system.
 The voltage alternates between +120 volts and -120 volts. This swap is not instantaneous as shown. It's actually a smooth transition through all voltages between +120 volts and -120 volts and back again. In an alternating current system the current moves back and forth as the voltages alternate.

| Also circuits for motors 1p and 3p and heating elements(240v)neutrals not needed since they are resistive loads.I like that diagram scott.
