Subject - Current Flow
lyonpj Please explain current flow in a single phase 240v circuit, or a three phase circuit, why is a neutral not needed? Without a neutral how then does the current get back to its source? Does the current cancel, and if so, does the current flow simply stop at the load? Thank you!
Scott Vickrey
First you need to understand the voltages in the system.

The voltage alternates between +120 volts and -120 volts.
This swap is not instantaneous as shown. It's actually a smooth transition through all voltages between +120 volts and -120 volts and back again.
In an alternating current system the current moves back and forth as the voltages alternate.
electrofried Also circuits for motors 1p and 3p and heating elements(240v)neutrals not needed since they are resistive loads.I like that diagram scott.
Scott Vickrey Thanks, I worked on it untill 3am.
