Subject - Electrical Topic for College
JimmyDee I have an individual that e-mailed me requesting help for coming up with an electrical topic for a college class. He also needs a source for references for that topic. Not having ever developed a serious study in this arena, I would like to throw it out to the members here to see if you can help also.
I think if we could come up with 3 or 4 electrical topic suggestions he could choose from, that would be great. One thing I do know from the thesis I wrote, he needs to write a paper on something he is interested in and likes. Some paper's research gets to be long and if you don't like the subject, it can become very painful in a short time.

Here's few topics off the top of my head. I will try to provide references for a single topic if chosen. Let us know which topic he is interested in.
  • The World's Different Electrical Standards
  • Magnetism and Inductance
  • History of Electricity

Ryan_J Soemthing that I think is cool is to build a transformer out of a couple spools of wire and a screwdriver (for the core). That is always in interesting way to really understand what a seperatley derived system is and how to learn about mutual induction.
rmansfield Where does he live? You may want to suggest electrical code revisions for hi-rise structures proposed after 9-11. Source could be Port Authority of NY& NJ,(PA)owners of the WTC. Backgound: After the 1993 bombing the lights went out in the entire facility, requiring evacuation of the building in the dark. It took 5-6 hours in smoke filled dark stairwells. After that, the PA ran a cable in a tunnel under the Hudson River from an independent source in New Jersey to power fans and lights in the stairwells. It worked on 9-11-01 and allowed the buildings to be evacuated in about 1 hour, saving 20,000 -30,000 lives.
