Subject - Site Outage
Scott Vickrey Sorry for the site outage. The server farm that hosts this site is upgrading their pipeline. This will increase their connectivity capacity by 400%. I couldn't even get email, so if you sent me one and I didn't reply that's why. I wish they would have given me a warning.
Scott Vickrey Ok it's time for me to explain why the site was down again. The host decided it was time to renumber the servers and sent me an email telling to log in to my account and change the data base IP to the new number. I did and the site immediately stopped functioning. After an entire day wasted it turns out that somehow they corrupted the database. The reason it took so long to get the site back up is their refusal to believe they may have done something wrong and not try to help me investigate it. After they restored the back up of the data base and charging me $60 to do it! Every thing worked fine. According to them somehow that was my fault even though they wouldn't explain why. Stating I did something to the DB when I never even logged on to it. Anyway it's time to change hosts. Don't worry this should be a bumpless transfer and you should not even be able tell when I make the switch. Sorry for the back to back long outages I am taking action to prevent this in the future. This site can't be at the mercy of poor host. Thanks to all who tolerated the inconvenience.
John A. Peters Hi Scott,

Want to take this time now publicly a thank you for your forum and all the blood, sweat and tears you must have put into it since you started it years ago while shepherding it along the way as it grew and came alive.

I gather by now that the switch to a another host has been achieved, and you were right it was quite glitchless. I hope they are a bit more responsible and are willing to accept responsibility when if they make a mistake, if such thing happens again instead of charging you sixty bucks.

Do the increasing value and utility of the message base here on your forum, I do have to ask you how are you handling the backups nowadays? There always can be a hard disk crash, lightning strike, script kiddy, hackers and crackers so I thought it might be smart to ask if you don't mind. JP

Scott Vickrey Back-ups for this site and it's data are performed every night by profesional server administration types. All is secure. They are now garunteeing 100% up time and imust admit the server has been really stable. They must be using reduntant servers now.
Mike Delaney Scott,

Is there other expenses besides your time involved in hosting a web site?

Yes there are a lot of expenses Scott has to pay. Server time and storage are costly. This is why it is important for a site to have advertising to help offset these costs. It also helps if you would check out the advertisers here. One of the huge costs is for professional moderation. Thats why you get the likes of David, Doug, Chris and me. We do it for a little less than the professionals. We do it just for the glory of it and because it makes everyone like us a lot. Not.

Jim
in2serenity Wow, you guys get paid to moderate?? I thought you voluntered. None the less, glad everyone is happy with what they get, its a nice resource to have at our disposal.
