Subject - power cord length
jcharris I need to get 220 power out to my shop at the rear of my property.
Instead of running underground wire from my household panel can I construct a heavy duty 100 ft extension cord with 220 male and female ends and then plug it in to my household dryer plug in when I want to run my table saw? If so what gauge of wire would I have to use?
Scott Vickrey I recommend the underground solution. Even though you don't want to do it. If your reason for not wanting to do this right is financial. Here's a tip: Get an electrician to show you where to dig the ditch and you dig it. You have to dig it straight (no meander) and to the depth required by your local codes or ordinances. Then call the electrician back to do the installation. You will have cut out alot of the work notably bringing the cost down. You need power out there anyway right? What about when you want to add something else to your shop? The bad thing about long cords is things happen to them. Making them a hazard. And your dryer outlet is hardly a good place to get power from. You would have to run the cord in walkways through doors and let's not forget having to move the dryer two times everytime you want to use it. You will be eliminating unnecessary dangers and will enjoy your shop that much more. In the long run this is the easy way. I hope that helps.
