Subject - House & Car Wiring??
Just a Six Hello,
Can I use 12 guage wire house wire (solid) as compared to the strand type wire when installing a switch on my car? The size is fine but should I use it or buy some typical car type wire?
Thanks!
Scott Vickrey You need the flexibility of The stranded wire to prevent the vibration from damaging the wire. I recommend going out and picking up some stranded wire.
Just a Six Thanks!
Was just looking at this half spool of wire from my house project & considered using it but now I'll just find another house project instead!! I guess the wire is made differently for a reason which I now know!!
Cheers!!
David Hyatt Usually even the stranded wire is different. (more strands and smaller stands as well.)
frenchelectrician let me add this one more thing that the automovite wiring is diffrent than building wires due more fexibale and diffrent insluation on it because under the automovite hood the temp is far much higher than typical building wire will intercounter it [ ave hood temp can go high as 240 degress ...

merci, marc
JimmyDee I would use MTW wire. It is high temperature and very flexible. I use it all the time for auto wiring.

twildenhaus automotive wiring is standed and low voltage can flow with less resistance. solid cored wire has too much resistance for low voltage such as in an automobile.

Solid wire actually has a bit less resistance according to the tables in chapter 9 of the NEC. Low voltage does not flow with less resistance. If anything, the higher amperage, because of ohms law, will cause it to flow less.
Ohms Law rules.
