JimmyDee I agree that the oxygen sensor is place to start. You can check them with a digital VOM (this is a must) and read the voltage coming from them. The range is 300mv to 850mv or so. Take the reading and then cover the intake and restrict it to almost killing the engine. The volts should swing to the opposite max.

for your chevy tbi engine any chance did you check the oxygen sensor ?? it is very common cuprit with high mileage vechiles and somecase the egr is stuck too. but my suggestion is start at the oxygen sensor that will be the first place to look for it. btw is the spark plugs look black or tan or white?? if tan or dark white you are ok but black mean too much fuel butif really white it useally mean very lean mixture.

anyone have an idea how to fix high fuel comsumption on 88chevy trottle body,,,,runs great,,,but the pipe is super black from running very rich.....
cs409 i was getting 19 to 20,,,now am lucky if am getting 14.....exh. pipe has a lot of sut,,,is that how u spell it?
