Subject - Condos
David Hyatt The previous condo question has me doubting a job I recently completed. These are very old condos and heres how they are set up. One feeder comes in for six units and a house panel. All meters are made together with one feed. Below each meter is 100 amp panel, main lug only. There are 3 double pole breakers in the panel, six spaces only. 60 amp to lighting panel, 30amp to water heater, 20amp to condenser unit. Needed to add a dryer outlet. So I removed the old 100amp main lug panel and installed a 125amp main lug panel with 8 spaces. And ran the dryer. Even though the wire from the meter to the panel is good for 100 amps and the total unit load is not 100amps, My question is what about the service wires themself. They weren't sized for dryers, and if everyone added dryers the service it would not hold.
Was what I did OK? Should I be weary in the future doing this? I need to be able to sleep at night. Many units not in the same building but the same complex has don this. What do you all think?
JimmyDee What you did is add another main breaker and legally you could still add 2 more to keep within the 6 main breaker rule. Its still a 100 amp service and I think what you did was OK but I'd like to see what some of the inspectors have to say about that.

David Hyatt Me to, I want all input available. I would be afraid if everyone decide to do the same then we may have a problem overloading the whole service. I do have a confession to make about this job though that probably isn't the greatest thing just bent the rules a little. The panel had bus bars to accommodate (4)2 pole breakers and after very aggravating work installing it, I realized it had, plastic inserts if I am describing it right, preventing the fourth breaker from snapping in. It was hard to get it in( the problem was at the back of the breaker not where it connects to the buss) but I did get it in. It was almost like it was designed to be modified to work but was made as a six circuit panel. Has anyone ever seen this? GE 125amp weatherproof?
