Subject - Receptacle In Kitchen Wall Cabinet
AlMack I have an existing receptacle on a wall. Can I make a cut out in a kichen wall cabinet and install it over this receptacle? (Concern over violating code)

Dave Nix No, not necessarily. Give us more details to see if we can help.
David Hyatt Are you trying to add another receptacle above, in a cabinet, an existing outlet? It should be fine, if you don't have to many wires coming into the existing box. You may have to change the old box out, install a larger box to accommodate new wire.(larger cubic in.) The other factor will be what kind of load are you adding, or what are you plugging in? If I understand the intent of your question, is it OK to install a receptacle in a cabinet, the answer is yes. Let us know. And thanks for your post.
AlMack I am installing a new kitchen cabinet over the existing receptacle. Previously there was not cabinet there.
JimmyDee I think as long as the receptacle and it wiring remain accessible, it should be alright. We do that all the time for Fan/Microwave plugs that go over the range.

Electricmanscott This is fine. Go ahead.
David Hyatt Just don't like Jim said don't cover over the receptacle. Because as sure as you do you will have a problem and won't be able to find it because it is behind the cabinet. If there is no need for it there, I would suggest doing away with it completely.
Electricman Often times you would have to use a box extension cause the back of the cabinet stands about 1" away from the wall leaving an unsafe gap between the conductors and the wall plate. If you dont need the receptacle you may just want to cut a hole in the cabinet use the extension and put a blank plate over it. Keep in mind that this receptacle can not be counted as 1 that serves the countertop.Hope this helps let us know how you make out.
gserve Not to high-jack this thread ,but I had a similar situation where there was a furnace wall switch on the wall and I wanted to put a cabinet there. What I did was remove the box from the wall and drilled a hole in the cabinet passed the wire through the hole in the cabinet and sleeved it with flex for protection and cut the new box into the side of the cabinet. I assume this is a code compliant instalation? Any comments?
JimmyDee I don't think it is acceptable to ever cover a box of any kind for any reason. It has to be assessable.
Jim
Electricmanscott Jim I agree but this is not the case here.
