Subject - Bare or Insulated

Does the code specify grounds in a raceway or otherwise of a certain size to be insulated or can they be bare?

David Hyatt
| That would make sense, if it is isolated to be insulated.

| This should answer. 250.118 Types of Equipment Grounding Conductors. The equipment grounding conductor run with or enclosing the circuit conductors shall be one or more or a combination of the following: (1) A copper, aluminum, or copper-clad aluminum conductor. This conductor shall be solid or stranded; insulated, covered, or bare; and in the form of a wire or a busbar of any shape. Jim

| I'll bet there is at least one place the code specifies "insulated" EGC!

| Would this be the same place that says "isolated"? Just a shot in the dark without looking in the book. Let me know, will ya Dave?

Yes, I would like to see that one myself. Jim

Only made it through 555 in your list. All I have seen so far is that the code allows in certain situations, the ability to run a ground wire outside (or isolated) from the main current carrying conductors or an insulated ground that is part of a cable system. I will maintain that for normal, everyday wiring with conduit etc., bare ground or insulated are OK. quote: Does the code specify grounds in a raceway or otherwise of a certain size to be insulated or can they be bare?
I know I'm being a little general here but going with the original question, I think I have that liberty. Jim

| Ok,
quote: Does the code specify grounds in a raceway or otherwise of a certain size to be insulated or can they be bare?
Yes.
quote: 680.21 (A)(4) One-Family Dwellings. In the interior of one-family dwellings, or in the interior of accessory buildings associated with a one-family dwelling, any of the wiring methods recognized in Chapter 3 of this Code shall be permitted that comply with the provisions of this paragraph. Where run in a raceway, the equipment grounding conductor shall be insulated. Where run in a cable assembly, the equipment grounding conductor shall be permitted to be uninsulated, but it shall be enclosed within the outer sheath of the cable assembly.

| Good job Dave.

| I stand corrected. On edit: Maybe not. Article 680 is not for normal wiring. Its for swimming pools and 680.21 is for the motors associated with a swimming pool or spa. I'll stand with my original until proved beyond a shadow of a doubt. Jim

| Hi Jimmy,
Your original question didn't specify!
quote: Does the code specify grounds in a raceway or otherwise of a certain size to be insulated or can they be bare?
But to be fair, the answer to the original (certain size) would be NO.
