It has always bugged me to see temporary Christmas decorations still up and on in March and April. My question is, (I know the answer) when do they have to be removed legally? Jim

|
Ryan_J
| Article 527 says 90 days.

| You are 100% correct. Had a student point that one out to me. I have a neighbor that I'd like to throw this one in her face. Seems as though something was missing in her childhood that had to do with Christmas. The tree lights on in April are a bit too much. Have you ever inforced that one? Jim

| I agree that temporary wiring installed by an electrician, as in feeders and branch circuits for large displays, that would have needed a permit and inspection in the first place, has to come down in 90 days.
Some Christmas lights plugged into an outlet by a homeowner are a different story IMO, they can stay up forever.
Is a homeowner required to pull a permit and have Christmas lights inspected?

Scott Vickrey
| Awe Jim don't take away the woman's lights. She probably loves those things.

Don't be a spoil sport. I just want to tell the lady that she is in violation of the code and see how she reacts. I'll even show her in my brand new code book how she is not only tacky for having her Christmas decorations up half the year, but also violating the NEC. Don't you think that would be fun. Jim

| Yes... Jim i think that it sould be enforce..Show the art. in the NEC and then if she doesnt complied then call an Electrical inspector and if you dont get any where with that call an state Electrical inspector.

Yes, I'll bring in the big guns and distroy the old lady. I'm sure the state man will shut her right down. Jim

| I apologize guys, but I have better things to do as an inspector than drive around telling people to take down their Christmas lights.
Question: If they are not energized, does this type of enforcement even fall into the scope of the code? You know, practical safegaurding?
|
|
JimmyDee
| Actually I could care less if people leave them all year. I thought this subject would be a hoot. I do wounder why they leave them up. Maybe they just like them? Jim
|
|
David Hyatt
| Yea, I agree with Ryan, if they are not energized that can't be against code. I didn't say anything though, letting Jim get his frustrations out on a little old lady. I know its all in fun Jim.

She has them energized all year long, 3 or 4 times a week. Jim
