Subject - Uninstalling an electric doorbell
Dee I have no experience w/electrical wiring. I am going to replace the old electrical doorbell with a recently purchased wireless chime system, but I am assuming I need to cap off/tape the wires to the door bell. It's supposed to be low voltage (home is 15 years old). Researched Lowe's Home Improvement site and it did not suggest turning power off to this item. Installing the wireless system is going to be easy for me, I just want to know if my assumptions are correct about the wiring. Thanks!
JimmyDee There should be no safety problem with taping the wires but the proper way to do this is to disconnect the wires from the feed at the panel. More that likely, at your service panel, there is a little transformer mounted to the side or the bottom of it. This is low voltage and you do not have to concern yourself about any safety issues. Remove the 2 little wires that are terminated on the surface of the transformer. (probably red and white) Move them out of the way. I wouldn't damage these because you may want to return to this type of door bell again. Thats it.

ricky Yep.Sometimes I find that transformer in a closet, mounted to an electrical box.Even under the house! They like to hide'em.That transformer is 120volt primary to 16 volt secondary. Is'nt it amazing how many doorbells don't work.I'll bet 3 out of 10 doorbells don't work.Waddaya think?
Electricman Ahhhhhhhh.........those sneaky little transformers could be anywhere I found one once attached to the top of a pullchain fixture in the basement . The homeowner or someone drywalled around it, the thing was buried in the ceiling of the basement. I have seen them with 18 and 24 volt secondarys as well. Be careful make sure you turn off any power that feeds this circuit before you disconnect the transformer, be safe the power feeding it is 120 volts and it dont take much of shock to send you to judgement.
