Subject - 12 lead 3 phase motors
Uncle Wayne Hello. I found this site trying to do some research on 12 lead motors. Back in the dark ages when I went to trade school, I (think) remember that a motor with either 6 or 12 leads could be connected to run through a wye / delta reduced voltage starter. My question is can a 12 lead, 3 phase, 240 / 480 volt motor be connected as a standard motor and started straight across the line. Taking for granted that the electrical service will allow such etc. I've always thought a 12 lead motor was nothing more than a 9 lead motor with the internal 10, 11 and 12 leads brought out to the peckerhead. Following a standard high voltage connection with T1, T2 and T3 tied to the supply, T4 and T7, T5 and T8, T6 and T9 tied together in pairs with T10, T11 and T12 tied together should allow the 12 lead motor to operate in a high voltage WYE connection. Following a similar connection using the connections for a high voltage DELTA a 12 lead motor should operate as a standard motor. The main difference in a 9 lead and a 12 lead motor is 12 leads would allow the motor to be used in a Wye / Delta reduced voltage starter where 9 leads will not. Agree or disagree? Any help would be appreciated.
JimmyDee I dont have a print in front of me but yes the motor can be used with a standard cross the line starter. Wired many of them that way with no problems. Europe uses these motors for a kind of soft start that reduces the starting inrush current. The will start and run just like a standard 9 lead motor.

IGORE I agree. USMOTORS.COM has a page for common and uncommonly found motor conections. From my experiences you should use the delta connection or run winding for across the line starting. I've seen a 150 hp motor burn up when connected in wye for a single contactor starter. I'm starting to see a lot of 12 lead motors these days.
