What are the dumb bell shaped objects seen on HV Transmission Lines at each insulator??
Here are a couple of pics as requested.

| I'm not sure which one you are talking. The dumb bell shaped objects near the 'tower' should be insulating disc. Some 'colourful balls' placed around mid-way of the long transmission line are for visual of plane or helicoptor.

| You might have to send a picture. I can't picture what your talking about either.

| I think what Fred is talking about is a device that is used to discharge a lightning strick or static build up on high voltage transmission lines. Jim

| I'll stay with what I said in previous post. Jim

| I have built some transmition lines in the distant past, but I have never seen those before. Are they near every pole or just that one?

David Hyatt
| Maybe its a perch for doves, so they won't get fried? Just kidding.

| These are wind dampers. To avoid the overhead lines swinging by wind.
|
|
Scott Vickrey
| I'll buy that.

JimmyDee
| Sounds better than my theory. Jim

| They are on all the poles in this area, but in a different area of the same line there are none.

| I talked to a guy next door to me that works high transmission lines in the upper part of south carolina that says they use them for ark protection. He said it helps stop high arks coming down the line from getting through the insulator and getting to the pole.the one they use mounts under the insulator and is called an ark horn, but they do the same job.

| these are actually anti vibration dampers. used to relieve stresses on the conductor where it attaches to the insulators due to vibration of the conductor caused by wind, load, ..

| Seems pnor77's reply supporting me!

| I just looked these up in the HUBBELL Power Systems FARGO catalog and it says they are vibration dampers.

| My senior worked in power co and he told me that it is wind damper as I posted before. He felt strange when I asked him this. He expected that this is commonly known!

| Not only are they found on high voltage transmisson line but also found on some traffic light and street light too where they intercounter high viberations like truck traffic and also noticed found a bit on bridge applications too.

| It sounds like vibration dampers have the votes! Thanks for the information. Fred
