Subject - power out in 1/3 of house
Pam Any help would be appreciated.....

Last night kitchen undercabinet lights started to flicker........I unplugged them........next thing you know my son tells me that the power is out upstairs(both bedrooms, but not hallway or bathroom (bathroom & hall on different circuit breaker)....reset breakers, did not help........continued checking & now most of kitchen receptacles are dead (Oven line, refrigerator, garbage disposal, diswasher) 1 receptacle in main floor bedroom also dead.....have reset breakers to no avail........i've pulled out of the wall all of the plugs & checked with a voltage tester..........nothing, no obvious broker wires, everything connected as it should be

any other suggestions?

thanks, Pam
Pam how exactly would I test the terminal side for voltage...
i have this basic little tester I use to see if the plug or wires have and electricity flowing...
also, just before the power came back on in the kitchen in several of the receptacles, but is now out again......

Pam if the breaker tripped you either have an overcurrent( too many things running on the circut) or a short somewhere. Did you try turning the breakers all the way off then on again and testing the terminal side for voltage?
Also lights will flicker if there are appliances in use connected to the same circuit.

wireman Don't try this one yourself unless you understand the inner workings of panels, whats hot and what's not. Call several electricians and ask how much they charge to do a service call to troubleshoot.
Electricman I have seen houses lose half of the service leg to the house (utility problem) Do you have an electric range or dryer and do they both work correctly? If they dont you no longer have 240v supplying your house. You would have to call an qualified electrician to check this out.

Sounds like a main lug has loosen up or one of the terminals on the main breaker. Try resetting the main breaker by turning off, then back on. If no go, call an electrician. This is not one that you want to do yourself.

David Hyatt You may get out cheaper by calling the utility company first. Sounds like one leg of power is missing, could be from the main breaker being bad or utility company losing a leg of power. Instaed of paying for a service call and the electrician may not be able to fix the problem call your utility company first. Good luck.
Pam Thanks for all of the responses!
I called the electrician out..he came this morning
He went straight to the breaker box & discovered that that one side of the power was not even coming in the house.....
Out he went to the side of the house & found that the contractors who put up my siding 4 weeks ago had inadvertently loosened the connection & it gradually came undone .....
He remade the connection, checked a few things, added a box by my dishwasher for me & off he went..........everything now works
He was here for over an hour, charged me $98.50, which seemed reasonable......
Amazing what a professional can do!
Thanks, Pam
