Subject - Virginia still working under 99 code
mike D can any body tell me why va is still working under the 99 code when the 2002 and 2005 code books are out and they just started working under the 99 within the last 8 months seems like there behind the times .
John A. Peters For one thing it costs about 60 bucks to update your code books when the new code comes out every three years. If you need several sets it can add up to a bit of money.

It also takes the local government a bunch of meetings and a few thousand dollars worth of payroll expenses to approve the new code when ever it comes out.

There's nothing to prevent you from using the latest code book before it's been adopted in your jurisdiction.
kbsparky I knew that the Eastern Shore of Virginia was still on the 1999 Code, but did not know that this afflicted the rest of the Commonwealth.

Can you tell me, does the whole state adopt the Code by reference, or can individual counties adopt their own standards? Which counties are you working in

lctrc789 Ken, usually each county adopts to the codes at different times, some mat be under 99 and some under 2002 and so on...

Could this result in code violations? Are there things permitted in 2005 that are violations of the 2002 code?
mike D I thought the hole state adopted it at the same time im from richmond ,Va and dont even get me started on the journeyman licence what a joke my apprentice told me his teacher told him its against the law for a inspector to walk on a job site and ask to see some ones licence Va doesnt enforce any laws or rules about having a licence. IM thanking maybe it has some thing to do with being a right to work state..

Are you referring specifically to Virginia Or other states in general?

In Maryland, I know this is the case. But in Virginia, the State has taken control of all the tradesmen certifications, and master business licenses.

States like Delaware adopt the Code statewide, the individual counties have no control or jurisdiction over the licensing or regulation of electricians.

Yes, there are allowances in the 2005 that would violate the 2002, particularly in the hazardous locations articles.
Wirenutz Our state is still on the 1996 nfpa 72, and we've not only heard every excuse under the sun, contractors are getting 'stuck' bettween older code requirements and newer ones that bear crossreferencing , like life safety, sprinklers , etc ...
