Subject - New wiring
MaxMatt Hey all,

Has anyone ever had a problem with orerload on old wiring.

I am working in a house with 75+ year wiring. I was asked to start in the basement Because it is going to be a new living space.
Anyway I am replacing all accessable lines> but I am fearing an overlod on existing line in the home. Not sure, prabably parinoid, But has anyone experienced complication with this. The homeowner is talking about replacing everything, but wants to start there. and move on in time. but this is new feeds basically to the rest.
any nitemare stories. Thanks
lctrc789 Yes I have had a few older homes back in the day that the existing wiring got overloaded, best thing to do is to run new wires and run new home runs for the basement, so that you will not have any additional load on the existing circuits.
You never know what the homeowner will plug in to these and the less you have on the existing wiring the better....
Good luck
stedder Probably wouldn't hurt to get some spares up to strategic locations while construction is going on, maybe even a chase, could save time, money and damage later on. And make phases 2,3 and 4 go alot smoother.
blackrd There isnt much you can do with the homeowners constraints on budget. If they overloaded the circuits before thay are still going to be overloaded if you dont somehow divide things up. Try to route a chase up into the attic for any second floor rework, you can access the first floor through the basement. Mounting deep j-boxes in the attic for your home runs to terminate at for later use is what Ive done in past. Just dont go out of your way and do too much too soon, in case they decide they dont need phase 2,3,4,etc.
stedder Agree blkrd, good idea to find out how $$ serious the ho is first, I have spares in houses that have been resold and the new ho do'nt know my name but Iv' also had times when I wish I'd drilled bigger in top and bottom plates 'cause the ho keeps thinkin' of new stuff on the 2nd or 3rd floor. Oh well
