What is the City of Philadelphia Electrical Contractors License considered, a journeyman or Master Electricians License.How hard is the test?

| Otis, Iam a licensed electrician in the city of Phila. I took the test under the 1996 code cycle.It is not a journeymans test in philly, journeyman work for the licensed guys . The test is given by the national assesment institute, which presides over the test. To qualify you must have a minimum of 4 years in the trade. after meeting this requirement, you pay them 50 dollars to apply for the priveledge of taking the test ,after which it cost $100.00 paid to N.A.I. who will give you a test date. Ok , The test consists generally of calculations, which could range from apartment buildings to whatever,to general code questions. You have apprx 3 minutes per question and there could be 100 questions. Its not a test you should consider taking without preparation,unless you like to waste money.good luck

| I believe the distinction is between someone who has completed their apprenticeship after four years ,and demonstrated proficiency to the point where they become a journeyman . one who is qualified at what they do .I believe the root word journey tells it all . Anyone in this trade knows that when you come of age the journey has just begun. The master Electrician (as used in the context of credentials given by the city) is sort of a misnomer in my opinion.The city must give a test which carefully screens those who aspire to take it to determine that those who pass it are qualified to be unsupervised ,and to thereby supervise others ,therefore; they give those individuals the priveledge after they show themselves to be proficient by passing the test.after that they have to purchase a minimum amount of insurance to show financial responsibility. They are then given a license which gives them the ability to pull permits for jobs. There is a burden of legal responsibility involved ,thus that individual has to endeavor to become proficient not only in good faith to the customer but also for their own self preservation. The title does not mean that anybody who might bear such a title has mastered the disipline since we are all on the path trying to accomplish that very thing otherwise what would be doing here?
