Subject - ground fault transformers
jerry pike Ground fault sign transformers are taking over the sign industry in waves, more and more inspectors insist on their usage when it comes to neon...i hated ground faults sign transsformer for many reasons 1)they only worked if it had it's own ground pulled from the panel, 2)even if the got wiring shorted out along the can it would remain arching burning into the can or die itself out after time not good, and 3)we were replacing them every other week or more.finally they came up with a ground fault with a brain, they added a test mode switch with color lights(green, amber, and red) green meaning operation is working properly, amber meaning its been wired incorrectly or it went into test mode caused from an electrical short in any case it will turn red and cut itself off on the (secondary side)leaving the primary lines hot or still(has power in the primary lines)...they make trouble shooting a little easier and they prevent unnessary fires, and they will work with any grounding termination whether from primary ground,or pig tailing to iron, metal studs,or to the transformer can itself...just remember different cities different rules. Plano, TX wants the ground from the transformer tied in with primary ground and onto a grounding lug attached on to the transformer can and the transformer can bolted not screwed down in place.
