Subject - Mig Welder Circuit
nomotor I want to put in a 220V, 30amp dedicated circuit in my garage (just on the otherside of the panel). I have a non-used 30 amp breaker in the panel that was to be used for the electric dryer (we went with gas). Do I need to swap this 2-pole breaker with a GFI breaker for my mig welder? Anyone . . . Ferris . . . ?
blackrd Outlets such as these for welders, dont need gfi protection. The outlet configuration doesnt allow any kind of portable equipment to be used, other than your welder. There are special considerations for sizing your supply conductors as well as your breaker.Look at article 630 for more info. Owning a tig and mig setup myself, if you have a basic hobby style mig, a 30 amp breaker fed with correctly sized conductors, you should be fine, assuming your mig uses a 30a recep.
nomotor Thanks Blackrd. The question spawned from a comment made by a friend who said I needed to install the receptacle 6 feet above the garage floor OR use a GFI breaker in the panel. BTW where do I find Article 630?
blackrd Are you an electrician or employed in the electrical field? Article 630 in the NEC. If you are not an electrician or in a related field, please disregard my correspondance, and hire an electrician for this job. If you are into bodywork, etc, do you know a good source for AK or SK steel?
