Subject - new meter socket on vinyl siding
bmuse61 Have to due a service upgrade on a house with vinyl siding. Last one I did failed inspection because the j-channel on the vinyl siding had to be cut away due to the larger meter socket. Had to go back and install a wood block behind it to make the AHJ happy. My question is has anybody seen a siding block that would go over the existing siding? I have seen the Arlington product, but that is suppose to be installed prior to the siding. Has anybody tried to install this with the siding already up? Thanks in advance.
stedder Actually, yes I have, it was on a modular and I had to zip off the siding below and cut back where the meter J block was going, yes it turned out good and yes it was a pain in the a**, About an hour just to mount the block and re-install the siding.
kbsparky We routinely mount meter boxes on vinyl siding, without any siding blocks present. In some cases, where there is not any real wood sheathing present, we have to install strips of plywood under the siding for support. But most of the time we simply mount the meter box and disconnect switch right on top of the siding.

In cases of new construction where the builder wants the meter box installed before the siding is installed, then we use some sort of siding block, either a piece of thick plywood wrapped with aluminum customizing, or a plastic pre-made unit like those manufactured by Arlington.

bmuse61 This a replacement meter socket and the new one is going to require the existing siding to be cut, thus removing the j-channel. I think we will try to install Arlington's siding block and be nice and careful trimming back the siding to fit into the groove on the block. Thanks for the info.
