Subject - Panel Board Sizing.

I know how to calculation residential service size. My question is if I want to install 2 panel boards, one outside and one inside, how do I determine the sub-feed panel size. I want to install a 200 amp outside and a 200 amp sub-feed on the inside. Is this code legal. I do this all the time in mobile homes. Have some load off the main panel and then the rest off the inside, but both are 200 amp. I feel it should be OK because never will I exceed the main rating because of the main breaker on the outside panel. So technically I could have a 225 amp panel on the inside feed from a 200 amp on the outside. The inside wouldn't matter because it comes down to the main breaker feeding the inside. Not that I would do the above anyway, I just wondered if I could?

| WE do that all the time. Use an outside meter/disconnect box for such installations. Outside circuits, such as to feed a detached garage, shed, or lift pump are more easily fed from there, rather than using the inside panel.

| I have done that many times with a 200 amp disconnect 8 or 10 circuit panel outside for other circuits and then fed a 200 amp panel inside as the panel for the home. It is still protected by a 200 amp main and you cannot install a sub larger then the main. Many modular and trailers here by the lake where I live
