As many of you know I have a small oompany as well as well as work my everday job as an Industrial electricain. Well Friday the 04 of march my son called and said Dad you need to come out here and look at this building I know that you will say it is wrong but I need you to come verify I am not seeing things. A small business ofiice had called for us to come and see why their lights flickered and their computers were not doing right etc. They had just had an electrical contractor do the work for them 3 months ago when they moved in to new offices a small building. I got off work called my son and met him there, This is what we found, Building has a machine shop at the north end with a 277/480 Wye service (MAIN) and they have their own stepdown transformers to feed 120/208 voltage, this supposed contractor installed a 277/480 primary feeder to a new 75 KVA transformer for this businesses loads. They had installed this transformer with no grounds what so ever none to the building, water or ground rods at all. Well I looked at the main panel they insalled for the business and they had made this a single phase panel now, OK no big deal until I looked at what they had done, they had used 12-4 M/C cable 3 hots and one neutral that just doesnt work well LOL Not in single phase panel anyway. When I told the business owner that the panel could be changed to 3 phase or we need to run 12-3 M/C cable and the estimated costs he was dumbfounded, as well as ground this system.
He brought me the cost of this job that he had paid for and of course what we would have to charge him for this to be done right. The electrical contractor wasn't even from here, in another state that apparently was there doing work for the general contractor. I am still working on this contractor,(if they are even legit) and trying to help this poor man see what we can do for him. No permits pulled for this I found that out yesterday from the city and I guess this guy will have to pay to have work done right, what a shame that we cannot be all licensed and bonded this is a major rip off. I see alot of this type of poor workmanship and it can make all of us hard working legit guys that are licensed etc... to look bad.
