Subject - Milbank Meters
Wirenutz I'm bidding on a 400A 1ph service, need to place a meter/main on the building, looking at a milbank # U4835-X-2/200-BL because it has two UQFP-200 breakers....seems Milbank makes the most diverse line of meters, but i wondering about options here??

what would you use?

lctrc789 GE Superior Milbank and ITE as well as others I am sure make these main breaker panels with disconnect and meter base.
Check around on pricing and availability and see what is your best choice. I have used Milbank and they seem to work fine.
Wirenutz thanks Pat, i am not aware of a line called 'Superior' , probably because none of my suppliers carry it, have you used them?

kbsparky Do you have to use a combination meter/disconnect box? One option would be to use a 400 Amp stand-alone meter box, with (2)-200 Amp disconnect or feed-thru boxes mounted next to or behind it.
Wirenutz kbsparky;

the particular poco dictates outside disco's only. So yes, i could use two units side by side, save for asthietc value

people freak out at the size of some meter installations don't they?

and really, if Lutron can have 27 colors for plates, why can't some meter comp at least have an option other than gun metal grey?

lctrc789 Wirenutz, yes I have used Superior Many times and they are as good as the rest.
THe Larger Power company here gives us both Milbank and Superior meter bases.

That is not the case around here, I'm afraid. "Superior" in a word, ain't ---> their boxes have been removed from the approved list from at least one utility company here. Seems they had a big problem with the paint peeling off of their enclosures, as well as the boxes falling apart when one tried to remove one or more of the bottom knockouts.

The most common meter boxes here are Milbank, and Landis&Gyr. I believe "Siemens" is the same as Landis&Gyr. We used to have "Durham" but I have not seen any in quite a while now.

The power companies here on Delmarva stopped giving away meter boxes about 18 years ago. Now, you have to buy your own at the supply house just the same as you would your panels or breakers.
lctrc789 We have 3 major power comapnies here and one you have to bu the meter base at another you can get no more then 2 at a time and Indianapolis Power and Light (EAS) will give a maximum of ten per contractor at one time, they still do not charge as of yet. Milbank, Superior, Landis is the three around here.
