Subject - stepping down voltage
david59 Jammed myself on the job yesterday,
I was asked to run power for a 230v battery chager and a 230v miller plasma cutter. I ran 2 legs off a 480v 3 phase disconnect to two 250v plugs with ground, when I hooked it up I got 240v from either hot side to ground but from hot to hot I got 480v. I pluged them up, threw the switch, BAM!!! blew the controller fuses in the chager but I lost the converter board in the plasma cutter $150 glad it wasn't the mother board. There is no 230v in the shop, do I need a transformer or a converter.
JimmyDee You sure do if the only source is 480 volts. Where are they getting their 120 volts that feed the outlets from?
Jim
lctrc789 Yes you need to step down for 480 to 240 and see where they are getting their power for their offices and 120 volt recpts. at.
Always check your voltage at the source 1st to see what you have from phase to phase and phase to ground.
david59 I found a not used 120v circuit in a blanked off junction box in our shop, I should just have to replace the single pole breaker for a double pole 15A, pull another hot leg and wha-la, 240v.
