Does this form have infrared inspections as a topic? I was unable to find any information. I am looking for infrared pics of motors with issues. I have questions as to how hot is too hot.

If you touch it and it burns your hand it's too HOT. :)

There is no single answer. Anyone can take an IR camera out and take pictures with it.

>Interpreting< what those pictures mean is why you get certified.

I have worked with 2 completely different companies doing infrared inspections. One company used a unit that used liquid nitrogen for the temperature baseline and the other one used a $50k unit that was all digital. Cost for the entire paper mill ran about $12k for the nitrogen analysis and less than $2k for the digital camera analysis.
We got a complete pictured analysis with the digital job and only a text return with the other. Both men were certified and came up with similar results but the digital analysis was easy to follow up on.
Now as to how hot is too hot, I'm not sure about that but I would think that the people that are selling the hardware to do this, would also have a training book or video training that they would sell.

Not that it will mean much with regard to motor heat and “how hot is too hot”:

But:

Every scan I have seen shows the thermal image a digital image for perspective and a temperature graph and reading.
It shows the ambient air temp and the problem area temp.

The reports that I see are for lug landings and disconnects and also wire terminations at breakers.

Just looked at a report and the problems were classified into these categories. All temps are F and are temps over the ambient air temp when the shot was taken.

Minor - 2-18
Intermediate - 19-63
Serious - 64-135
Critical - >135

Maybe this is too simple, but if you IR scan some electrical gear and one of the terminations is reading any kind of elevated temperature, an electrician can figure out what is going on. Measure the load, look for loose connections and corrosion, too small a wire size, overloading and all the other things we know about but that are hard to spot without an IR camera.

I just got a request for a quote to do a safety inspection for a couple of apartment houses. The owner's insurance company send a long list of things to check and the IR test was only one of the items. I think this is a good thing.
