Subject - Dead Outlet
greekguy7 One of the outlets in the kitchen is dead... I removed the outlet and measured the only 2 wires there.. about 35volts. Its not the breaker cause other outlets on the same circuit work. This happened all of a sudden.

i also noticed that the dead outlet buzzes, even when the outlet is removed. anotherwords, there is a buzzing sound coming from the 2 wires. Since this outlet only has 2 wires, it may just be the last outlet on the circuit. I think the kitchen range hood and fan is where it comes from before. Any ideas or tips where else to look and most likely causes? Thank you!
lctrc789 You are not saying how old this house is, But could it have a GFI somewhere in the kitchen and this outlet is downstream form it.
Also if it does not have a GFI you are right you must find what is feeding this outlet and troubleshoot it out.
Go to the next closest recpt. open it up and check for loose or bad connections and then to the next etc.....
Make sure of course you are careful and if you need to shut the power off for continuity testing etc you may have to do this to find where it is fed from, unless you have a tracer that would be real nice in this case.
Good luck and keep us poated on what you find.
kbsparky I'd be willing to bet you have a buried splice in that wall that has come loose ... hence the buzzing noise. A fire hazard to be sure ... can you remove the box and peer down into that wall cavity with a mirror?
nino Loose neutral in a splice in the circuit.
John A. Peters If the wires are in conduit then most likely you have water in the pipe and it is boiling and buzzing. Some times the wires burn in half and the 35 volts is coming through the water.

What color are the wires? What size?

Turn off breakers till you find which one eliminates the buzz or the 35 volts. Now all the other plugs that are off are in need of inspection starting with the one in the direction of the panel from the bad outlet.
greekguy7 Ok... I took a look at the other outlets in that circuit and all the conenctions seem tight there but i still have no voltage at the dead outlet wires (red and white). Anything else I should try or do I have to start opening up the drywall at this point to locate a splice? Thanks!
nino verify the neutral from the dead outlet until the next outlet with a ohmeter, then go for a splice loose in middle of a outlet to the other outlet.
pnor77 greekguy7, did you verify that the 2 wires at the dead recept are going back to the recepts that you checked for the loose connections? It's possible that tthis recept, the dead recept, is on a different circuit. If so check this out and you might find your trouble.

I noticed that you mention RED wire. If the receptacle is attached to the red wire of a three wire cable, it may be possible this is controlled by a switch. See if there is a switch located somewhere near the receptacle (it may be on an opposite wall) that is in the off position. Plug a lamp in and start switching switches .
