Subject - Same building different service.
David Hyatt I was told that you could not have two services entering the same building if both had a neutral.
Then I was told the neutral doesn't matter that you could'nt have two services of the same voltage entering one building.
Which one is right??? Is either right??
JimmyDee One building generally one service. However if you are in need of 3 phase power, an additional service can be run. Ungrounded delta is an example. You would not run an additional service that has the capability of becoming an additional lighting service.
Jim
frenchelectrician to order to get second service you have to get the POCO and the inspecter to see the sisuation there and many time [ most percentage] the POCO will have specal charge for second service and some case they will encourage to change over to better system like from 120/240 v SP to 120/208Y v 3 ph service some area which i ran into few time have both 120/240V sp and 277/480Y v 3 phase most will ask you to switch over to latter one due the transfomer set up and few other sisuation too

merci , Marc
lctrc789 I don't know about where you live But here ONE SERVICE per building.
They can add 3 phase service but for the most part if you are running an open delta they still require one service and a neutral in that situation at least here they do.
Ryan_J David, have you read 230.2?

David, the following is the exception in Article 230.2 that allows an additional service.
quote:
(D) Different Characteristics. Additional services shall be permitted for different voltages, frequencies, or phases, or for different uses, such as for different rate schedules.

I do agree with lctrc789 that the power company may force you to combine your single phase service into a 240/120 wild leg 3 phase system. However some of the power company's are greatly discouraging these wild leg systems and forcing you to install a non grounded, delta 240 system or some prefer the 208/120 Y system. I would talk to the power company to find out what they want and do it.
Jim
lctrc789 For the most part, I always call the local power company and get an engineer out there. It can save you a lot of time and money.
David Hyatt Well the power engineer we talked to today is going to allow the seperate service. We explained to him that all the equipment was going to be at the oposite side of the building. And if we didn't we would have to set a 400 amp panel then sub feed the exsisting panel, and the cost was just too much. Alot cheaper to add new service. Thanks for all the imput.
karlwayne I am preparing to start a remodle job of an old 4 story building. There are two services coming in the basement from the underground utility tunnels. The switchgear is all one unit,( probably from the 1940s'), with a 240/120 V - 1 phase and a 240 V - 3 phase ungrounded delta.
The design group shows on the plans that we will reuse the existing services ( pipe & wire) and installing all new gear.
The 240/120 1200 amp service I understand, but when he changes the 800 amp 3 wire delta to read "240/120 3 phase 4 wire" I struggle.
Before I call the archetech, what are your views?

Don't think you can do both. You already have a lighting service and the only reason to bring the neutral in for the 3 phase would be have the service to be used as a lighting service.
Jim
CooCooMike there used to be 6 different reasons to have more than 1 service entering a building
fire pump
emergency
buildings of large area
different characteristics(voltage, freq.,phase etc)
multiple occupancies
capacity req.(over 3000 amps)
