Subject - Heat air unit
David Hyatt I am wiring a 60 amp heat/air unit. Everyone says use #6/2 w/gnd copper Romex, but nm cable is only rated for the 60 degree column, so I would say a #4, do you agree, or is there an exception to this rule?
lctrc789 David table 310-16 all wires up to 100 amp must be from the 60 degree column for termination reasons, however #6 wire is good up to 55 amps in that column and you are allowed to use the next size up which would be 60 amps.
So I would say that # 6 wire is acceptable in this case.
David Hyatt Thats what I was looking for, thanks Pat.
frenchelectrician yeah you can use the #6 cables but i am not too conftable with that size because one other issuse is the loading demand factor like how long is that heating device will be on like constustion on useage or interment duty cycle so there fore i will like to double check it to make sure it is up the code , for my personally usage i will stick with #4 romax wire due the duty cycle and voltage drop there.

kbsparky Most air handler units in heat pump systems have electric strip heaters in them that require that 60 Amp circuit. IF you are connecting a 10kW or less size unit, then that #6 has plenty of capacity to handle the load. Your load will be around 42 Amps or so.
