Is it legal when installing can lights to put a junction box above the can light and then splice a piece of BX to run to the can light electrical box. If so how close does the junction box have to be to the can light and how long does the piece of BX have to be.

| Yes, you can do that. The junction box should be within 6' of the light fixtures because, the BX (refered to in the code as metal clad cable or Type MC cable) should be 6' or less. If you can make them shorter do so. Don't cut them too short. The cables shouldn't look stretched tight or have excess length.

| I thought the junction box had to be accesible from the can light hole if it's in a drywall ceiling. If it's 6' away then you couldn't really access it could you?

| If you can get to the junction box by getting into the attic then it's concidered to be accessible.

| sorry that I wasn't very clear about the location but it's in a basement and the rooms above it are finished

Can you use NM and daisy chain from one to the next to the next?

| if the j-box is not accessible I don't think you can do that, I know it would be a bad idea. will the wires reach to the can?

| Yes, you can use NM wire provided the junction box is accessable through the can opening and the NM is supported within 12" of the junction box and fixture.
