Subject - BREAKERS
POPCHUCK52 DOES ANYONE KNOW IF CUTLER HAMMER BR BREAKERS CAN BE SUBSTITUTED W/ ANY OTHER BRAND OF CIRCUIT BREAKERS?
Scott Vickrey It's more than a coincidence that these breakers fit into other breaker panels but, if you call the manufacturer they will not give you this information. You may have already discovered this. There must be something legally prohibiting them from telling you that you can use them in other manufactures distribution panels. Even though in reality they are sometimes installed in some GE Panels.
David Hyatt The local authorities in my area will not allow changing breakers from one panel to another even though they will work. Some manufactors make after market breakers to fit other panels and are UL listed to fit other panels so sometimes you can change for on to another.
Dennis Bussell
Several brands of circuit breakers are "interchangeble". However, if you use an off brand "physical equal", the panelboard will loose it's UL listing as an "assembly."
GARY T. THE NEC REQUIRES YOUR PANEL TOINCLUDE BREAKERS BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER.
electricalpro Interchanging the breakers is not approved method due to UL listing, Each piece of equipment is tested and certified for use with the manufacturers equipment. Even though it will work and has in the past, The UL will be voided in this case.
AMPMWIRED SCOTT IS ABSOLUTLY CORRECT.MANY BREAKERS WILL FIT SEVERAL OF THE SAME PANELS BOXES.THE MAKERS OF PANELS WANT TO SELL YOU THERE BREAKERS ONLY FOR THERE PANELS.THE WILL NOT TELL THAT OTHER BREAKERS WILL WORK IN THERE BOXES JUST FINE ,BECAUSE THEY ALSO MAKE THE OTHER BREAKERS.A MURRY PANEL WILL ACCEPT A G.E.,CHALANGER,SQUARE D HOME LINE,I.T.E.,THOMAS&BETS,ECT. GRANTED, BY USING OTHER BREAKERS THEN THE PANEL MAKER YOU CAN VOID THE U.L.RATING. RULE OF TUMB IF, THE NEW BREAKER IS OF THE SAME SIZE & FITS SECURLY IN THE PANEL & ON THE BUSS BAR YOU WILL BE FINE.SOME OLD PANELS LIKE BULLDOG,ZINSCO,F.P.E.& SO ON DONT MAKE BREAKERS ANY MORE ,OR REPLACEMENTS ARE MADE BY DIFFERENT MAKERS,SHOULD YOU NOT INSTALL ANY BREAKERS?
