A resident engineer wants to load an existing transformer (5000 KVA) to a load of 130% (not fuse at 130%).I want to install a new transformer and size it to the load not exceeding 80% of the maxium rating of the transformer. Who is correct?

| Is the 500 KVA an actual connected load or calculated one presuming that everything is on and running. Remember an unloaded transformer is a bad power factor creator and he may have some credence in that figure. The power companies do it all the time and when they get overloaded, they artificially cool them. I have a friend that works at a power plant here in Michigan that on the big usage days in the summer, they spray water on the cooling fins. If you have an actual, proven 5000 KVA(measured with amp meter and voltmeter) and it is continuous and not just an occasional peak, you would be correct. If not, he probably is correct. Sorry for the ambiguous answer. Jim
