Subject - physical damage?

At my work place, we have a lot of cables (communications mainly) which are subject to very hot plastic being dropped on them. This causes the wires in cable to melt and short together. The only other treat of physical damages is people standing on them at some times. This does cause a lot of problems like last night had 20 hours of down time, trying to find shorted wires. It also took out an encoder card from the short. jpfaltzgraff@thevortexgroup.com

| Why would they install the cables in such a manner as to subject them to that type of damage? Jim

| Maybe they should change the way they are ran and install them in conduit. Or intsall them so they can't be physically dmaged in some way. It may be a huge cost now, but imagine how much down time can be saved and trouble would be a lot less.

| The only other way to run then would be overhead which would require some kind of support, and this could get it the way of other equipment, or repairs. The people handle hot purges get it every where so no real safe place. The question is EMT. Would be sufficient protection, but EMT not supposed to be subject to physical damage. The hot purge would not really be a physical damage to EMT. So could EMT. be used or would I have to suggest RMT? I just want to be sure I have it all correct before I suggest the change.

| vegafan, I ask you this, is cable tray out of the question here. I am assuming that it is because of the hot purge. EMT can be used where not subject to SEVERE PHYSICAL DAMGAGE. I think you are the one that knows exactly what you have here. I suggest you read article 348-5 and maybe all of article 348 to help you on this. Without seeing what you have here exactly HOW HOT< HOW MUCH WEIGHT falling etc. I cannot say you may have to use your best judgement on this. However if they are losing time due to wires being cut damaged etc, I would think they could save money and time in the long run with some type of protection for what they have.

| Thank you I will reread these sections. The purges weight is not real an issue probable about ten to fifteen pounds, but takes up a very large area at that weight. So the PSI is very low temp is about 450degrees to 600 degrees. So the temp is issue, but even EMT should protect from those temps. This sight is great, and I will reread this sections.
