Subject - power cable from alternator to switch board
agan Hello everybody,

Please help me to solve this problem. We have a 600 KW (415V,50Hz, 3 phase) alternator , which required to be wired on a 3 wire ( no nuetra) to a swichboard. What is the size of 3 core cable (cross section dia) to be used? howmany such cable per terminal to be connected? where can i have the list of cable and corresponding Amp rating? how do u calculate the cable size?

Pse help

Thanks
Ur friend Agan
JimmyDee This is a large generator that will produce somewhere around 8357 amps. My first question is, are you sure it is a 6000 KW generator and not 6000 watts? A 6000 KW generator is almost large enough to power an entire small city and biggest 480 volt generator I have seen is 4 mega watt (4000 KW) and was built in the 1930s.
This size generator would almost never be temp wired with cable to a panel because of size of the copper. The 4 meg generator was wired with buss bar and a lot of it.

lctrc789 Are you sure it is 6000 KW or 6000 watts what a difference that would make. I agree with Jimmy here something that large would be better off on being on bus bars not parlalled conductors.
JimmyDee Just got an e-mail from "agan" and he said the generator is a 600 KW. That will lower the amperage to about 835 amps. Don't have time right now to answer but will, if I can, later on in the day.
