Subject - Common swimming pool violation
Ryan_J Feeders for swimming pools must be in a raceway. 680.25(A)
quote:
(A) Wiring Methods. Feeders shall be installed in rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit, or rigid nonmetallic conduit. Electrical metallic tubing shall be permitted where installed on or within a building, and electrical nonmetallic tubing shall be permitted where installed within a building.

That means if I have a pool panel outside and I feed it from a panel inside, it must be in conduit all the way from the insidehouse to the panel.

How often do you think this happens?
lctrc789 We allow only PVC in our county because of the chlorine near the pool. They are not allowed to use UF wire or metal conduit in three counties for pools by the local ordinance.
Pierre Belarge With an insulated eqiupment grounding conductor

If the EGC is a 6 or smaller, than it has to be identified green along its entire length 250.119(A). This means buying and installing a green insulated conductor - no colored tape.

SteveMc That makes me glad I ddn't get the pool job I quoted a few weeks ago. I quoted it at $1300.00, the HO said he could get it done for $500.00. I told him that he was getting a deal and that he should call the guy before he changed his mind.
I didn't include in my bid running conduit across 75' of crawl space and into an existing panel. Thanks Ryan, for pointing out that I should have. I missed the "shall" in 680.25(A).
cs409 Ryan are you saying that u have been passing the above without it being in conduit after it entered the dewling?
Ryan_J Casey...mistakenly, yes I have passed a few that had a cable inside and a raceway outside. I won't anymore! From what I read, that feeder circuit is to be in a raceway whether its indoors or outdoors.
David Hyatt I feed a panel to a pool, run romex from inside panel and junctioned UF cable to run underground to a pool panel. It passed so everyone makes mistakes. I did not realize this was a code issue.
David Hyatt Would this apply to branch circuits feeding a pool?
Why does it matter if its in conduit or not?
Ryan_J Hi David. It doesn't apply to branch circuits, only feeders. As far as your other question goes....I don't have any idea why 680.25 exists...it seems strange to me as well.
Pierre Belarge 680.25 exists because of the potential chance of chlorine degredating the insulating.

680.21(A)(1)General. The branch circuits for pool-associated motors shall be installed in rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, rigid nonmetallic conduit, or Type MC cable listed for the location. ('02 NEC)
There is some relief for wiring methods for single family dwellings - but that is the general rule for branch circuits.

Wirenutz ok, i can see the insulated grounding conductor /UF dispute justifying conduit per chlorine here, yet any conductor run UG is basically going to be a wet location anyways right?

so is chlorine somehow less corrosive in a UG raceway?

~W~
Wirenutz more thought,
via the pipe rationale, UF could still be used, and simply stubbed up ...

yes no

blackrd I have seen more than a few very scary pool/spa installs, allegedly done by "electricians". No gfi on the panel, pvc exposed, nm wire buried, etc. I am quite certain, without definite proof, that most if not all these installs didnt even mininum burial requirements. I know the buried romex didnt because I hit that with a machine. I have hit romex numerous times with machines, and you would be amazed the ammount of ****(sorry) a homeowner will give you for destroying their unsafe install( with or without being injured or killed). You stumble across a hazard and are berated for it, so much for gratitude.
INDIANA I've sure seen alot very scary installs to say the least!!!!!!!! Or I thought they were anyways, because I like to sleep at night!!!! Things like same story---- no GFI breaker, no ground, or ground / neutral in one..... In Indiana since we dont have a state wide license every Tom,Dick,Harry,Joe that has a pair of KLEINS is an electrician...... Or thinks they are. I do have to say though the buried romex or single strand conductors always touches my heart... Then when the home or business owner tries to justify the situation... Please gime a break!

See ya,
Kevin
fishinelectrician I got nailed on not having run conduit. so I set a small panel outside and piped to the pool panel. The inspector got a laugh out of it and passed it.
Ryan_J Fishin electrician: Long time no see. How you been?
