Subject - L14-30 converting to L6-30
jimppar Thanks for any advice in advance....

My company has a generator that has a L14-30 receptacle (4 prong, 220V). I need to plug in a large UPS unit that has a L6-30 plug (3 prong). How do I convert from the L14 to the L6 so the generator can supply power to the UPS?

JimmyDee There is a danger in discussing this on line because of the possibility of a misunderstanding between the parties involved. Before I begin, let me state that you should seek professional help from a qualified electrician.
It looks like one of the wires is the ground. That will be true in both systems. The other 3 wires in the generator system are 2 hot wires and a neutral. This is used to be able to produce 2 different voltages. 240 and 120 volts. The neutral is used to get 120 volts.
With the UPS, I am assuming it has a 240 volt feed. By the elimination of the neutral wire to the 3 wire plug that feeds the UPS will do the job for you.
Please remember this is an assumption because I can't see the equipment you have but I think it is correct.

jimppar Thanks for the reply Jim. I understand the statement of caution on this.

The UPS input is below just in case something looks awry from that end. Dropping the neutral sounds easy enough assuming all else holds true.

Nominal input voltage 208, 240 V
Input frequency 60 Hz +/- 5 Hz
Input Connection* NEMA L6-30P
Input voltage range for main operations 156 - 252 (208) / 17 V
Input Power Factor at full load 0

JimmyDee Sure looks like that all you would have to do is drop the neutral.
