Subject - earth ground connection problem
twildenhaus I am installing a 200amp service panel . The earth ground is 5/8 rebar that is going through poured footings all approved by the inspector. I went to attach brass grounding clamp and had to tighten all the way to even start to secure around rebar and my surface area contact to ground to me sucks because of the way rebar is designed and wont it rust and cause poor connection over time.I should have just used a normal copper 8' grounding rod. is there a sleeve I can buy to go over the rebar and how do I keep it from corrosion. the rebar comes up from the ridge cap and will be inside the wall but seems like I should have better contact.any ideas
twildenhaus Well I am going with a different type of clamp.. Thanks anyway
lctrc789 The ground you are referring to is called a UFER ground and it is the best you can have IMO. In the code book in article 250-66 (b) it is called a concrete encased electrode.
You do not have to use any wire larger then #4 wire for this ground.
Generally they cadweld or exothermic weld these to rebar, however if you are using a clamp and the inspector allows it, I would use a 5/8 football clamp and make sure you grind the rebar down to remove any rust. good luck
