Subject - 4 x 4 J Box
cs409 Can you use a 4 x 4 J Box for a ceiling fan mount? such as mounting the extentions pipe to the J Box?
JimmyDee Most boxes that are fan rated have 10-32 screws and the screw taps of the box are reinforced. There is usually some additional mounting bracket for attaching to the ceiling joist. I do not think I have ever seen a 4" sq box that has this type of hardware so I would say no.

It would depend on the mounting hardware for the ceiling. All the one's I see DU are self aligning [makes it real easy to ballance the blades]. Is it possible to repalce the existing pipe with the extension??

Article 314.27(D) Boxes at Ceiling-Suspended (Paddle) Fan Outlets. Where a box is used as the sole support of a ceiling-suspended (paddle) fan, the box shall be listed for the application and for the weight of the fan to be supported. The installation shall comply with 422.18.

This should answer the question.

cs409 thanks Jimmy and Andrew..... reason for the question is i saw such an instalation, 4 x 4 j box mounted to metal roof truss system, with maybe 10 ft pipe where the fan was mounted at the end of pipe! box was mounted such that the bottom was mounted on the roof truss with the 10ft. pipe attached to the side of the box with fan mounted in a reg way! hope yall understand how this box is mounted! bottom and cover of box mounted in a east/west, left/right, poss.
JimmyDee It might work but the code says its a no, no.

You might be surprised. They are expanding all over the place and it wouldn't surprise me to see them there.

aussiesparky The closest thing over here is K Mart!!
cs409 in the morning andrew, be very careful, wal mart may have showed up!
aussiesparky Oh no I'm not going to sleep tonite Casey.
Just in case they sneak up behind me!!
and but their new store in my front yard
renosteinke I learned the trade the "old way," and I admit that the use of a 4" square steel box, with mud ring, bolted to a 2x4 that is in turn anchored to the ceiling framing is a generally accepted practice.
I also admit that the code committees have been having a lot of fun with this subject, and that this practice violates the latest "word."

A few quotes from the UL "white book:"
1) "A box, with or without bracket or bar hanger, intended for the support of a fixture weighing 50 lbs. or less, is provided with a marking "FOR FIXTURE SUPPORT" on the carton....";
2) "Metallic device boxes and metallic device plaster rings have not been investigated for support of a ceiling fixture.."; and,
3) "A box, box with bracket, or bar hanger intended for the support of a ceiling suspended (paddle) fan....is provided with a marking on the product "ACCEPTABLE FOR FAN SUPPORT....".
tony thrower I have seen the installation described where the installer used a safety chain, securing the downrod to the ceiling joist, independent of the box.
This would be acceptable in my part of the country but I am not certain it meets the code.
What do you think?

I would say it doesn't comply with the NEC. It may be as safe as a fan rated box for mechanical strength but if the system is not listed, can't use.

aussiesparky Casey FYI
No Walmart yet
But I'm waiting
cs409 cant understand why yall dont have one!!
