Subject - Exterior outlets
rmansfield My house has typical vinyl siding that has a 1/2-inch cant at the bottom and is flush at the top. When installing an exterior outlet should the box be flush with the plywood sheathing or flush with the vinyl siding?
KSsparky I believe it is Bridgeport who makes an adapter for just this purpose that would solve your problem. 314.20 states that the box must be flush with or project from combustible materials, such as the plywood. The box must also not be set back from a noncombustible surface, such as the siding, more than a quarter inch. Hope this helps.
Electricman You can purchase siding blocks at your local home center, these blocks make a nice install set your boxs out from the house 1 and a half inches and the edge of the box will be flush with the siding block. I think the name of the blocks are Mountmaster or somethong like that.
JimmyDee You can also purchase these blocks that are recessed and your receptacle will mount almost tight to the sheathing. Box will be almost flush with outside of sheathing like. I like to use these.

David Hyatt I have done siding jobs on the side, and agree with Jim that the recessed blocks for outlets work best. If these are not used you wold have to use the box extension as mentioned above.
Electricman Jim, yeah I know the ones made by Arlingington Industries right here in good old PA.
rmansfield Thanks guys great info.
bigvic I use the Adjustable Zip Boxes from Carlon. They work great for siding, in cabinets, ceramic tile and floor receps. Anywhere you are not sure of your box depth during installation
