Subject - Measuring single and 3 phase
pyro Hi. I'm new to electrical, but am going overseas to a factory to measure the power outlet there. I need to measure single phase and 3 phase from the main power board there...how do I go about doing this?
Would appreciate any advice and methods....and things to look out for...
Scott Vickrey Jim, I hope you didn't just volunteer to go to Iraq.

pyro, Please tell me they will have an electrician assisting you.
Why are they sending you to do this? When you say "to measure the power outlet there" can you be more specific? I'm not clear as to what your trying to do so I can't advise you.

Being "new" to electrical and keen to learn, just slow down a bit. Not even seasoned electricains jump into a main power board in a factory to measure the power.
Where is the factory you are going to vist?
Why do you need to measure the power?
Would it be easier to talk to the electricain or electrical engineer at the factory to find the information you need.
In short exhaust all other options before opening up the main power board.
Remember you can't see electricity, but one wrong move it will bite you and if you are lucky you'll walk away
JimmyDee I agree with Aussiesparky on this one. Actually as bad as the shock danger is I feel the getting of something into the wrong place to start a short circuit and being in the middle of a meltdown brings far more fear than a shock. I have a friend that spent almost a year in the Ann Arbor, Michigan burn center. They had to surgically remove a polyester sweat shirt from him. Very little was left to the 4000 amp switch that blew up with him in the middle.
BTW, I'd be more than happy to go over there to help you out and get you all the readings you need. Just pay my expenses and I'll even do it free.

frenchelectrician Pryo:

let you know most power system oversea useally 50HZ [ few place still have 60HZ] and the voltage is 240 line to netural and 416 or 400 volts line to line both single and three phase but as i say some will have slighty diffrent voltage depending where the location you are asking . i will post a link here soon for the internaional voltage system but right now i will hold the colour coding because few area will change the colour soon and it is very complex to list it here but i will ask scott v. for his permmison to list it here when he say ok i will put in a specal place so all electricians and electrial engineers can look up some info.

merci,marc

p.s. some area will list higher voltage but i really cant say too much in here for safety reason.
cs409 Hey Pyro,,,,how about a bit more info? and how did you come up with the user name Pyro?

pyro Hi guys! Thanks for the concern. I am going to Iran for a field trip to check out the factory there. I need to confirm the 3 phase rating, hence I asking about measuring the 3 phase power. As for the name pyro, it comes from the word pyrotechnics....kekeke....guess you already know it.
