| Your local AHJ might take exception to your altering the fixture. If you are still going to install the fixture outside, it would seem the additional rules you would have to meet, such as the outlet you plug into remaining weatherproof, the cord being rated for outdoor use, etc. would be more trouble than it was worth. Are you wanting the light to be portable, or is there some other reason to make it cord and plug connected ?

| Debbie I'll take the standard electricians line on this one. Buy the light fixture that you need and spend the extra few dollars to have it installed by a licenced electrician. It will probably save you a lot of trouble.

| Debbie- I can't give a complete answer, as I just don't have enough information. It is certainly possible- but it may be a bit more involved than simply sticking a plug on it! Making such a change will convert a "fixture" into an "appliance." Different parts of the NEC, and different UL standards, are relevant for each use. Probably the two most important things to keep in mind is that the cord must be protected from strain and abrasion, and that the fixture must keep out dirt, etc. The heat generated by the bulb, and the fragile nature of bulbs, should also be considered.
