Subject - Ceiling Fan/Light control
cemjprat I have a ceiling fan/light that is about 12 yrs old. The control/wall switch stopped working. I need to replace it but am having trouble finding a 2 wire control. I ordered "Hunter" models but they are remotes that use a receiver in the ceiling. I do not want this. My ceiling fan/light were controlled by a wall switch only with two wires. Can anyone help?
David Hyatt Is it just a speed control? You can find hard wired speed controls they only have two wires. Check local lighting places or Home depot.
cemjprat The wall switch controlled both the light and the fan. The control would let me set the speed of the fan - low, med, high, and off. and the same with the light: low, med, high, and off.
David Hyatt This don't seem possible with only two wires unless it is a remote. Are you sure there is no remote involved?
YukonRay This is an electronic control. The line voltage is used as a carrier for the signalling circuit for the fan and light control.

Who made the fan? Was it Hunter? Did you check out Hunters web site for replacement parts. There is typically a recieving unit that goes in either the light canopy or the fan cieiling box canopy. it is kind of like a tv remote. It only works with the proper coded partner unit.

In your case you may need to replace the sending and recieving unit with a new one that are availble off the shelf. Find them at Home Depot or other home stores. You will probably have to replace the wall unit with just a plane ol' switch and opt for the wireless device for control.

Good luck
frenchelectrician myself i did see few old two wire fan/light control device and they used by hunter fan co. and few others but as i suggest that go to any big box store.
i am sure they have that on stock but cost will be about 35 bucks or so i am not sure excat numbers at all but wise idea to replace it as pair both switch and reciveing device[s] and wire it properly and it should work good for you.

YukonRay Fenchelectricman,

What is OCPD system?
frenchelectrician Yukon Ray :

OCPD = Over Current Protction Device aka breaker or fuses.
Jeremy Okay, just want to make sure we're not confused about the two wires. I just installed one of these for my sister - I can't let anyone in my family have a ceiling fan with pull chains: too ghetto for my liking.

The Dimmer/Speed switch available at Home Depot is a Luton model, with a split fader control. The switch has (4) wires:

Ground
Hot (from mains)
Dimmed Lamp (hot)
Fan motor(hot)

Your ceiling fan may be run with 3 conductors:
Neutral
Lamp Hot
Motor Hot

I suppose with some confusion, this would be a 2-wire system becuase only the two hots are attached to the switch. Count conductors from the fan and see of you have (2) hots (black and red) coming into the box.

rcknroll Modules have come a long way recently I installed a small contol unit (approx. 2"x1"x1") that fit neatly under the cowl over the junction box. This allowed me to use one hot and one neutral from the switch to control both lights and fan somewhat. It works by how many times you flick the switch, 1-turns on light, 2-turns off light and turns on fan, 3- turns both on and 4-turns both off again but after 3 min. the switch works normally to turn off whatever configuration you left on. This cost about $12.00 (american not euros Frenchy). You still need to pull the chain for desired set speed and cannot be dimmed without buzzing when the fan is on.
kringles Realize that this thread is quite old but is the fan a Casablanca by any chance? They make a fan that can be controled via a special switch and only two wires (120 volt hot and neutral). It is called the Intellitouch model, see the links below for more info
