Can anyone explain why a rotary phase converter makes a rattling sound (tinny) when some of the capacitor's become disconnected?

| You are looking for at least a 90 degree phase shift to run smooth at all. With some caps disconnected, the phase shift will lessen to much less that that and there is some magnetic fields that are getting in the way of a smooth operation and probably evening fighting the rotation a little. It is running way out of design by inducing the phase with a capacitor anyway and is way down on any power it could produce. I think it is like firing a spark plug at the wrong time in an engine by crossing two spark pulg wires. Hopefully the third phase will be induced for the other motors it will run. We use to install "Add-A-Phase" converters and they worked good. Jim
